The History of St Matthew's Westminster

Picture
© Andrew Sampson, 2003

This history traces the development of St Matthew's Westminster from its foundation in the middle of the nineteenth century to the late 1890s. Further information will be added as more research is completed.

In 1929, someone wrote in the parish magazine ‘I believe no one has yet written a history of St Matthew’s; could not someone take this in hand, before all those who knew it in its early Catholic days have passed away? It would be sad if there were no permanent record of this renowned church’.

It took a further 80 years for research for the history to be started however. If there is anyone who would like to contribute any information relating to the last 80 – 90 years or is related to any of the previous clergy or congregation, we would be delighted to hear from you, office@stmw.org.

A complete list of the numbered references is provided separately.
