The Congregation: profile of a family in the parish

Henry John Mountain moved across the river from Lambeth to live at 74 Grosvenor Terrace, Horseferry Road, in 1861. He was married to Mary Ann (nee Shaw) and they already had three children – Elizabeth Marian, Ellen Amelia and Alfred Henry.  Frederick Charles and John Henry were born in Grosvenor Terrace and were baptised at St Matthew’s on 3 February 1861 and 16 November 1862 respectively. In the 1861 census, the household contained the Mountains, plus Henry’s parents-in-law, a lodger and a servant.

Between 1865 and 1883, the family lived at 59 Horseferry Road.  Henry was a piano maker at the Broadwood factory in Horseferry Road.  His father-in-law, Shelagh Shaw, was a piano tuner.  Henry’s sons all worked in the factory, too, Alfred and Frederick as piano makers and John as tuner.  Elizabeth and Amelia became teachers.  Elizabeth began her training as a pupil teacher at St Matthew’s C of E School where she was supervised by Annie Hendly and  then spent a year at the Home and Colonial Training College before becoming the infants' teacher at Stanstead Abbotts School in Hertfordshire.
