The ‘Devil’s acre’: missionaries from the church

The Revd Richard Malone described some of the missionary work which was undertaken by St Matthew’s.

‘A curate, who had previously worked as a City missionary in the district, was provided by the Westminster Spiritual Aid Fund: three Scripture readers were supported by various friends.  One of these was an Irishman who could speak in Irish, and who visited the Roman Catholics in the numerous courts.  This poor man was assaulted and nearly killed whilst reading the Scripture in the Irish language'. [5]

Two church mission women and one nurse aided greatly in visiting and helping the sick.  Three Mothers’ meetings were held weekly; a class for blind beggars was opened and nearly sixty blind men and women attended.  Several of these poor people became communicants.’
