The ‘Devil’s acre’: new housing

According to J E Smith, writing in ‘Parochial memorials’ (1892), Mr W Gibb, who was a church benefactor, erected ‘model-dwellings’ in Old Pye Street for nearly 600 people 1863-64.  This work was a significant development for improving the ‘Devil’s Acre’.  He also contributed £200 towards the engagement of an additional curate and a ‘mission-woman’.
