The Revd William Trevelyan arrived at St Matthew’s when the church had been completed, the church school built and the Mission Hall had been built. The infrastructure for his ministry, which his predecessors had developed, was therefore in place.
In order to minister to a large parish where people lived in such deprived conditions, he needed to build a team to assist him. He recruited the following priests to assist:
The Revds R E Giraud and W H H Jervois, friends of Trevelyan.
Revd H E Simpson, a former student of Ely Theological College.
He was later joined by the Revd William B Croft.
He was also assisted by the two churchwardens, Henry Poole and E S Chapman.
